ABSTRACT
Depression is one of the most common mental health problems all over the world. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive therapy programme for the treatment of depressive episodes . This study was conducted in Wad Medani Mental Health Teaching Hospital during the period January2009 - June 2010. The study population included patients diagnosed with unipolor depression (142 patients). The sample included (60) patients )30)control group and (30) experimental group. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale and a questionnaire designed by the researcher were used to collect data relevant to objectives of the study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis, by using Pearson Coefficient Correlation,(T- Test), and one -way ANOVA analysis of variance to measure the statistical significance of the results. The results of the study showed that there ware significant statistical differences in the means of depression and dysfunctional attitudes in the pre –and post means between the experimental and control groups (in favour of the pre measure), and between the experimental and control groups in post measure (in favour of control group),and there are no significant statistical differences in the effectiveness of the cognitive therapy programme for the treatment of depressive episodes in accordance with Sex, age group, educational level, occupation, number of previous depressive episodes, length of symptoms before treatment, and the presesnce of other psychiatric disorders. The study confirmed that cognitive therapy is effective for the treatment of depressive episodes.
It can be concluded there is a necessity for using cognitive therapy for treating depressive episodes.
