A number of methods and tools were used for data collection in this study including the survey method to identify psychology structures, the historical method to trace the date of establishment of psychology departments, and a case study to examine the position of psychology at the University of Khartoum. Moreover, there was content analysis of C.Vs to point out psychologists’ contributions. The study sample comprised 21 psychology departments at Sudanese universities, 15 private centers, 12 psychiatric units, and the kindergartens at six localities. Data were collected through many direct interviews and phones calls as well as manuals and psychology archives. Simple statistical processes were used to analyze the data. Concerning psychological structures, the results disclosed that 22 courses in psychology were taught. Teaching staff members at psychology departments were (132): females (51%) and males (49%), of them 45% had PhDs and 55% were M.A degree holders. The number of graduates from Sudanese universities were 7000 up to the year 2006. The study revealed that there were 200 graduates and 9 researchers for every one million people in Sudan. And psychology tends to be of the applied rather than pure version, social as opposed to biological, and abnormal over that for normal individuals. The study pointed out that there were significant differences between Khartoum State and the others in psychology-related services. It was found that educational psychology existed predominantly in applied fields for the psychologists (66%). Trends of psychology revealed that 20% of the psychologists trained abroad, particularly in England and 80% trained locally. However, one fifth of those who trained abroad had published in Arabic (70%), authored books (80%), were editorial staff of local, regional and international periodicals (88%), had published in English (90%) and had received local, regional and international awards (93%). This contribution of few psychologists (20%) is approximately equal to 84%. of the total psychology intellectual output in Sudan At the end of this study, some recommendations and suggestions were presented
